Race Day .. Sinopec 2006
| October 2nd, 2006I have to write this down before the butterflies in ma stomach go to a silence.
What a race day .. Chinese GP 2006, Sinopec, Shanghai China. Amazing race.
Yet another disappointment for Kimi .. McLaren could not hold long enough on the track. He was going well. Started of from grid 5 and went on to take pos 2. But after the pit stop .. on his 18th lap, Hydraulics gave up. Yet another McLaren’s Technical failure. He had the necessary speed today, could have easily given a fight for the lead to the then leader Alonso.
But the good thing is even Alonso could not hold it .. could not match the uncanny strategy of Ferrari today. Alonso started off at grid 1 and Shumi from grid 6. But soon there was a role reversal, all because of a bad timing of changing the tyres by Renault, after which Alonso just struggled to maintain the lead speed and slowly started to descend. We saw first Fisichella overtaking Alonso to lead the race and then Shumi overtook Alonso to take pos 2nd. But only till lap 41 when Fisichella (in 2nd Renault – Alonso’s partner) took a pit stop was out of the pit ahead of shumi to take back the race lead but merely for a nick of time before shumi took advantage of his heated intermediate Tyres over the newly placed Fisichella’s cold dry tyres. Fisichella struggled to gain some grip and gave way in a curve which was enough for Shumi to charge and take the lead. Once in lead it was a piece of cake for Michael Schumacher to finish in lead.
What a race. The one thing that changed the race totally from where it started was when the drivers choose to change their tyres. All because of the Wet Weather at Sinopec. The timing had to be perfect. And Ferrari mastered it today.
And now since Shumi. won the race with his 10 points and Alonso gaining 8 points after this race the both are now tied out at 116 championship points. Just two more races to go. What more a treat can a Formula 1 viewer ask for, that the championship race goes to last race of the year.
