Kal-El .. the voice of god!

Don’t ask me how this quote links to my post:

“A staple of the superhero mythology is, there’s the superhero and there’s the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he’s Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man.

And it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn’t become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he’s Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red “S” – that’s the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears – the glasses, the business suit – that’s the costume. That’s the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent? He’s weak……he’s unsure of himself……he’s a coward. Clark Kent is Superman’s critique on the whole human race.

Still struggling with boot problem. But besides that everything is working just the way I like it! Here is a glimpse of how my desktop currently looks like.

I have realized the “workaround” is turning out be my favourite word. A word the people around me hear me saying very frequently :D .

Thunderbird:

I cudn’t get it to work the way I wanted. But I found a workaround :D lolz. I have my Thunderbird profile in the default location in my Windows XP partition. It is an NTFS partition. I had been facing issues with accessible mails from Thunderbird installed in Fedora when I try to access the same profile in my NTFS drive. I want to do this so that I don’t have to sync/download emails in windows that I have already read in fedora and visa versa.

Its not that Fedora can not read/write an NTFS partition but there were some issues in Fedora Thunderbird accessing a profile on the default NTFS partition on Windows. So I made a secondary FAT partition and moved my Thunderbird Profile from Windows default location to this FAT partition. Now the same profile is accessible from both Windows and Fedora. awesome!

IM:

Gaim – the perfect multi-protocol Instant Chat Messanger. I use this solution even in my Windows. And again I don’t have to reconfigure everything in GAIM on Fedora. I can reuse the profile from Windows, even the chat history. Awesome.

For a voice chat it has always been Skype for me. Installed, configured, tested .. works perfectly .. text or voice chat.

Internet/Network:

Wireless was a problem till Fedora 8 for me. Just could not get the last installation of fedora to work with the wireless card on my laptop. But this time it was all a piece of cake! It took me a while to figure out how to configure Cisco VPN though. But it was easier than I actually thought. And it works seemlesly. SMB was never a problem.

Multimedia, Audio/Video:

Earlier I used XMMS earlier, but they have discontinued porting MP3 Codecs with the fedora version now, MP3 Licensing issues. So I discovered something new this time. Amarok (http://amarok.kde.org/). It is a KDE implementation of an ITunes like player. Very nice controls and UE!

Video playback has been a tricky thing in Linux for me. I relied on RealPlayer/HelixPlayer for it. Fortunately I found VLC for Fedora, so far I am happy with it.

Office Applications Package:

Fedora comes with OpenOffice.org 2.4 and thats all I need. Though now I am waiting for the official release of OpenOffice.org 3.0.

Remote Desktop Connection – Access Windows Machines:

rDesktop (http://www.rdesktop.org/) – rest assure. I very regularly work on RDP from office, so this was a much needed service!

Still finding out more ways the new Fedora Core 9 can amaze me! .. But for now its Race Day today! .. Monaco – Monte Carlo!
